Bacteria and Archaea, constitute the oldest and most diverse groups of micro-organisms on earth. Their impact permeates every aspect of life on this planet including nutrient cycling in the geosphere, decompostion of organic matter, and acquisition of essential biomolecules for eukaryotic hosts (symbiosis).

The primary focus of our research group is to understand the structure, function, and evolution of microbial communities. We specifically address these questions within the context of two distinct ecological niches; the Human microbiome, and Hypersaline environments. We employ a diverse array of conventional microbiology and molecular biology techniques, coupled with multi-omic characterizations (genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics/proteomics), to infer patterns in microbe-microbe, microbe-host, and microbe-environment interactions. We also rely extensively on the use of High-throughput Computing, Scientific programming, Bioinformatics/Computational Biology tools, and Statistical methods to mine relevant biological information from large complex datasets.

Prospective Students

We are always looking for motivated individuals to join our group. The interdisciplinary nature of our projects often requires an amalgam of skills. If you have a background in Biological Sciences, with either strong laboratory skills (Molecular Biology and Genetics/Biochemistry/Microbial cultivation), or analytical/informatics skills (Computational biology, uni- and multivariate statistics, and programming in Perl/Python/R), you will be a good fit for our group. Undergraduate Positions: Our group has a strong interest in fostering undergraduate research in the Life Sciences. Our lab typically hosts between 2-3 undergraduate students each year, including majors in Microbiology, Biology, Anthropology, and other affiliated fields.
